The Washington Examiner reported that in September, Pierre Omidyar’s Democracy Fund “routed $500,000 to the Governors Action Alliance to support ‘coordinating and strengthening the work of governors to address specific threats to American democracy,’ Democracy Fund’s grants database shows.” The Examiner said the grant was being disbursed until August 2025 for “state and local accountability,” that GSD sits under a Governors Action Alliance project sponsored by Global Impact, and that “Governors Action Alliance, the supporter of GSD, counts its founder and CEO as Julia Spiegel, a former senior legal adviser to Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA).”
A GSD spokesperson told the Examiner the group was “proud to have the support of a diverse group of donors” and, “as a matter of policy, we do not comment on individual donors or contributions.” Daily Signal’s February 17, 2025 exclusive repeats the $500,000 Democracy Fund figure and the Global Impact sponsorship, citing Capital Research Center on Global Impact’s other giving. Influence Watch cites Democracy Fund’s grants database search for “GovAct” and dates its access November 21, 2024: https://democracyfund.org/for-partners/grants-database/?term=GovAct. This site treats the dollar figure as what those outlets and the watchdog pages report from the foundation database. It does not invent a Spiegel personal donation.
